What affects the price of interior painting
- Wall area. Bigger rooms and tall ceilings take more paint and time.
- Prep. Patching holes, sanding and caulking can take as long as painting.
- Color change. Going from dark to light, or light to dark, often needs primer or a third coat.
- Trim, doors and ceilings. Detail work with a brush is slower than rolling walls.
The low end of the range is a newer painter at about $40 an hour. The high end is an experienced pro at about $75 an hour who travels to you. Many painters have a minimum charge of around $250. Prices are higher in big cities.

How the prices are worked out
Each price is your hourly rate times the typical time for that job, plus supplies and driving, plus your overhead and profit, rounded up to the nearest $5. Small jobs use a $250 minimum. If you work faster or slower than the times shown, adjust your hourly rate.
Before you post prices, check two or three local painters on Google or Facebook. If you're well below them, you can probably charge more.
