What affects the price of window tinting

  • Number of windows. Most shops price the two front windows, the full car, and a windshield strip separately.
  • Film type. Ceramic film blocks more heat and costs several times more than dyed or carbon film.
  • Vehicle. SUVs, vans and cars with curved back glass have more glass and take longer.
  • Old tint. Removing faded or bubbling film and its glue can add an hour or more.
  • Warranty. Better shops use name-brand film with a lifetime warranty against fading and peeling.

The low end of the range is a newer tint installer at about $45 an hour. The high end is an experienced pro at about $80 an hour who travels to you. Many tint installers have a minimum charge of around $60. Prices are higher in big cities.

Common questions

How dark can my tint be?

It depends on your state. Each state sets limits for the front side windows, back windows and windshield, so ask the shop what is legal where you live before you pick a shade.

How long before I can roll the windows down?

Most installers say to keep the windows up for three to five days while the film dries and sticks to the glass.
